A Kids Group Story
The Power of Music
As part of the Kids Group counselling program in late 2023, an enthusiastic group of bereaved children worked together with their NCCG counsellors to create their own song about grief. Music therapy experts Iani and Grace from local care organisation Sound Expression kindly volunteered their time to help the kids write, create and produce this very special piece of music.
The kids worked together to find words about their feelings of grief, questions they wish they could ask their parent, things that help them live with grief and how they feel about group counselling. These ideas were given back to Iani and Grace who created the lyrics and made a beautiful recording, named ‘A Friend’s Place’.
A Friend’s Place
Feelings of sadness, anger and fear
Missing you and I wish you were here
Photos and memories are so bittersweet
My family is no longer complete
Love keeps me going, it’s always in my heart
A glowing memory, never apart
Slowly I am learning to play
Friends can help me along the way
Our time together was far too brief
Now learning how to live with the grief
My friends and family help me cope
Knowing love lasts forever gives me hope
Coming to group makes it easier to share
Our grief, our pain, and the burdens we bear
It helps to meet others who walk a similar way
Tears not as many with each new day
Wish you were here by our side so near
How would life be if you were still here?
Why did you have to leave, why did you have to die?
Why did it happen, we still wonder, and cry
Seeking the answers to questions we ask
Seems like such a heavy task
Trying so hard to understand
Wishing that I could just hold your hand
Chorus
Talking in a safe space
Comfort in A Friend’s Place
Makes me feel strong
And that’s where I belong
