Leave a gift in your Will

Leave a gift in your Will

Leave bereaved children the gift of a life not defined by their loved one’s death.

Any size of bequest – a gift left to the NCCG in your Will – will make an incredible difference to the lives of bereaved children and their families.

What is a bequest?

Although there are different types of bequests, they all generally refer to a legacy gift left to be donated after your death.

A bequest can involve a particular amount of money, a specific item, or a percentage of your estate’s value. Your ‘estate’ is a term which refers to your total assets remaining after your death.

Before you start to think about the type of bequest that best suits your personal story and interests, it’s important to consider your wishes. What is important to you? How would you like to be remembered? Is there a special way to honour your legacy, or support something that has been meaningful throughout your life? We’re committed to honouring your wishes as you have expressed them in your Will.

What are the different types of bequests?

The NCCG is principally funded by community donations from people like you. We receive minimal government funding. Donations of any size help bereaved children receive the care they need at an extremely vulnerable time in their young lives.

Some the most effective ways you can leave a bequest to the NCCG include:

Specific gift

A specific or ‘pecuniary’ gift is a specific contribution of cash funds. An example might be that you choose to leave $5,000 to support our children’s bereavement counselling service for a period of time.

A residual gift

A residual gift refers to the act of gifting the remainder of your estate after all gifts have been dispersed to specific individuals or organisations in accordance with your Will. A residual gift could include any funds or property left over after your chosen beneficiaries receive gifts, and any administrative costs or funeral expenses are settled. For example, a person may decide to gift properties to their loved ones, use their personal savings to pay for the costs of a funeral service, and gift any remaining personal savings to a charitable organisation.

This can also be included as a percentage of the value of your general estate (i.e. all the funds, properties or assets against your Will), or a percentage of the residual once gifts and other costs have been processed in accordance with your wishes.

A specific asset

This type of bequest involves giving a particular piece of real estate, specific shares or other items, like artworks.

A final contingency gift
This is a gift of your estate in the event that all of the beneficiaries named in your Will do not live to take their gifts or inheritance.

How to leave a gift in your Will

We know that leaving a gift in your Will is a significant and precious decision.

The NCCG’s team are here to support you.

We would recommend six steps to sett up a gift to the NCCG in your Will:

1.    Consider
Read more about the work of the NCCG, including stories from our clients and staff about our specialist bereavement care services.
Chat to friends who may have already left a gift to their favourite charity in their Will. They can tell you what they learnt and how the gift made them feel.
Our team can also provide you with a range of additional information to answer any questions you may have.

2.    Contact
Contact Chris Waugh – our Head of Development, who looks after all our supporters, on 1300 654 556 or email him at chris@childhoodgrief.org.au. Chris and the team would love to hear from you and can provide all the information you need.
Any discussions will be kept in strict confidence.

3.    Consult
Consult your legal advisor or solicitor to ensure the option you’ve chosen best reflects your wishes. We recommend you seek the advice of an independent solicitor or qualified legal advisor before making any changes to your Will. You should also seek qualified advice before choosing executors to administer your estate.

4.    Discuss
Discuss your decision with your family and loved ones. This will ensure they understand and support your reasons for choosing to help the NCCG and bereaved children in this way.

5.    Write
Create or update your Will. Once your Will is updated in accordance with the advice of your legal advisor or solicitor, your life-changing wishes will be honoured.

6.    Inform
If you would like to, please inform us of your decision. That way, we can thank you for your generous commitment and keep you informed as you wish about our work.
